Improving Vehicle Displays for the Connected Car

Connected and autonomous vehicles are going to change the nature of the driving experience. The interior of the vehicle will act as a central hub of information for passengers. As a result of this shift, IHS predicts the automotive touch panel market will expand from 28 million units in 2013 to 86 million units in 2021 – more than a 30 percent growth.

In this segment of On the Road with Henkel, we explore the growth in automotive displays and the role adhesives play in ensuring these displays function at their best.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:

Speaker 1: [00:00:00] In today's connected cars and tomorrow's self-driving cars,

in-vehicle displays are becoming more important. We're on the road with Henkel,

just outside of Hartford, Connecticut, to see how new adhesives for in-vehicle

screens improve clarity and contrast, and how they help make these screens lighter,

and more rugged too.

Speaker 2: People have become increasingly dependent on technology. And the technology that people have come to rely on in their handheld devices on a daily basis will have to seamlessly integrate with their automobiles. That means by 2021, there's going to be more than 80 million cars built with touch integration and display technology, there's gonna be things like gesture touch, and sensors, and infrared sensors within the car. The display sizes and the display configurations are gonna have to change.

Our materials make it easier to design any solutions, they make the pictures more vibrant, they make the contrast higher, they make the user interface much more seamless. Optical clarity is highly dependent on having a bubble-free lamination. When you're laminating a film above seven or ten inches, if you have one, bubble that's a defect. With a liquid, you can apply the material so it allows for a more efficient process, it allows for higher yield rates.

Henkel's liquid optically clear adhesive technology is unique in the marketplace where we've developed them for mobile phones, tablets, and consumer electronic devices. These materials have greater than 99% transparency across various wavelengths. They can withstand much higher temperature ratings than traditional films, and they're easier to use. They can be used in a variety of shapes, sizes, dimensions. You can use one material for a 5-inch display, for a 10-inch display, for a 17-inch display. These autonomous vehicles are gonna change the landscape of the automotive industry. And Henkel is very well positioned to go along for the ride.
